B2B Ecommerce Trends: What Still Works, What Doesn't, and Where to Focus

April 10, 2026 7 min readPowerB2X Team

B2B ecommerce has moved beyond being a promise. Wholesale companies that began digitizing their channel between 2022 and 2024 now have data to compare: which trends hold up and which have fizzled. This is the view from inside real projects in Latin America and Europe.

1. The per-customer portal replaced the public wholesale store

The fantasy of open B2B ecommerce — where any business can log in and buy at a wholesale discount — barely exists in practice. What works is the opposite: a gated portal where each customer sees their own catalog, their own prices, and their own terms. Less public exposure, more commercial control.

2. ERP integration is no longer optional

In 2022 you could still sell B2B stores without ERP integration. Today, without that connection the project fails: double data entry, stale inventory, billing errors. Platforms that do not integrate natively with SAP, Business Central, Odoo, Tango, or Calipso have been dropped from every shortlist.

3. Automated quote building is the first win

No wholesale sales team falls in love with manually entering orders. The first thing that unites the team behind a project is giving their time back: letting the customer build their own quote, approve it, and have it land in the ERP ready to invoice. When measured rigorously, the saving is between 50% and 70% of a sales rep's time previously spent on administrative tasks.

4. Scheduled reordering became a baseline feature

Distributors in cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical supplies do not want to "shop online" — they want the system to suggest their usual order so they can adjust it. Portals that display the last order as a starting point and allow one-click cloning see purchase-frequency increases of around 35% month over month.

5. What did NOT scale as promised

  • Multi-country B2B marketplaces: they promised open channels, but most end up competing with their own suppliers and platform discounts erode margins.
  • AI chatbots for order building: they work in demos but fail with real catalogs of 30k SKUs and technical variants.
  • Dedicated mobile apps for wholesale buyers: responsive web with login keeps winning because it requires no installation and no dedicated mobile support.

What the fastest-growing companies adopted

  1. Gated portal with segmentation by account type.
  2. Native or middleware integration with the existing ERP.
  3. Automated price lists and volume discounts.
  4. Reorder lists and favorites to increase purchase frequency.
  5. Executive reporting by region, sales rep, and category.
  6. Coexistence with existing marketing stack (GA4, Meta Pixel, Klaviyo, HubSpot) without breaking attribution.
If you are evaluating digitizing your wholesale channel in 2026, order matters: ERP integration first, then self-service, then optimizations. Skipping steps produces beautiful stores that never invoice.
